"Silence and darkness, The sun rises with a joyous song of praise, It wanders its golden way and sinks quietly into the sea."
So wrote Danish composer Carl Nielsen on the score of perhaps his most popular work, the Overture “Helios”, written while watching the sun rising and setting over the Aegean sea in 1903.
There then follows Mozart’s joyful and sparkling Oboe Concerto in C major, in which we once again feature an accomplished young soloist, the oboist Henrietta Cooke. Henrietta is very much a local talent, with her formative musical years being here in Watford, at the Watford School of Music. She is currently now a student at The Royal College of Music in London.
Our programme ends with Tchaikovsky’s acclaimed Symphony no 6 “Pathetique”.
