Joseph Longstaff has been a pupil at the Purcell School of Music in Bushey since 2015, where his studies are funded by the UK Government Music and Dance Scheme and, as of 2018, by the Sir Charles Mackerras Scholarship, an award given to a promising young musician at The Purcell School, funded by the legacy of Sir Charles and Lady Helen Mackerras.

Joseph studies with David Pyatt, the principal horn of the LPO, and former winner of the BBC Young Musician competition. His previous teachers have included Sue Dent and Beth Randall. Joseph is very active as an orchestral musician, first playing with the National Children's Orchestras for four years starting at the age of 11, and has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for four years.

He made his Wigmore Hall recital debut in 2017 after earning his place on the programme by winning the yearly solo recital competition at the Purcell School, and has also performed as a soloist at the Duke's Hall (as the First Prize winner of the Brass Competition of the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department) and at St Martin's in the Fields. Joseph auditioned for music colleges in London in December 2018.  He was offered a full scholarship and was nominated for the prestigious ABRSM scholarship by the Royal Academy of Music. However, his long-held aspiration, for which he will audition in June, is to continue his studies in Berlin.
